Description

I own no land, instead I have wheelestate. I’ve been a full time RVer since 1997. Working summers as a Park Ranger takes me to many beautiful places and playing during the winter takes me to many more. This blog is simply the story of my life's adventures.

Scenic Sunday – Crazy Jug view

a459 Tapeats Terrace & Great Thumb Mesa from Crazy Jug Point FS292 Kaibab NF AZ pano (1024x734) (1024x734)

We sat in the camp chairs admiring the views from Crazy Jug Point.

And studied the lay of the land. The Colorado River flows northeast between Powell Plateau and Great Thumb Mesa then curves around the Mesa to disappear into the west.

Just slithering along

DSCF8599 Gopher snake Roaring Springs trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x789)

As I strolled roved along the Bridle trail the other afternoon the family in front of me kept looking back over their shoulders. I thought maybe I’d forgotten my hat, or something. But then they turned around and pointed out this Gopher snake trying to hide after crossing the trail in front of them.

SWF – USA clouds

DSCF8399 (1024x768)

The night sky presented the greatest show above Crazy Jug Point. See previous post and Mike’s post for the earlier acts. Doesn’t this cloud formation look like the southeastern part of the United States?

Camping at Crazy Jug

01 Kaibab Lodge Geodetic Survey marker Kaibab NF AZ

After a filling breakfast at the Kaibab Lodge we headed west on Forest Road 22.

02 Dry Park Lookout Tower & Mike Kaibab NF AZ (1024x525)

Stopped at Dry Park Lookout Tower but decided not to climb to the top. This is as far as Mike got. I’ve been up it before so that was alright with me.

03 Wildflowers along FR 425 Kaibab NF AZ

We drove very slowly through the Ponderosa forest blanketed with wildflowers.

04 West Lake Kaibab NF AZ

Made a detour to check out West Lake which was almost dried up to nothing yet was ringed with some very old fencing from ranching days.

05 FR 425 through canyon Kaibab NR AZ

We continued on Forest Road 425 down into a small narrow canyon amongst the Juniper and Pinyon woodlands.

06 Crazy Jug Canyon Kaibab NF AZ

And finally found ourselves at the rim, looking vast distances across the canyon.

07 Rain over canyon from Crazy Jug Point Kaibab NF AZ

We were treated to an amazing show as a rain storm came towards Crazy Jug Point.

08 Sun through clouds over Crazy Jug Point Kaibab NF AZ

Then as the rain passed over us the lowering sun shone through.

The vultures soared overhead.

And after the rain a promise fulfilled.

12 Sunset over canyon from Crazy Jug Point Kaibab NF AZ

Plus a glorious sunset to end our day of play.

Going camping

01 Storm clouds over SR from BAP NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

It’s been a little stormy looking over the canyon lately, but not much rain.

02 Aspen & Ponderosa Pine Forest Kaibab NF AZ (779x1024)

Yet we’re taking our chances and going camping in the Kaibab National Forest on our first multiple days off together since Mike started working several weeks ago.

03 View from Crazy Jug Point Kaibab NF AZ (1024x265)

View from Crazy Jug, one of those points is Parissawampitts

So many choices. I think I’ve whittled it down to Parissawampitts or Crazy Jug Points where we can park the truck camper almost on the North Rim of Grand Canyon. Then rest and enjoy the view or take a hike on the Rainbow Rim trail.

04 Saffron fire smoke above Lodge BAP NR GRCA NP AZ (763x1024)

Smoke from Saffron Fire above Grand Lodge

With the predicted light winds from the west we shouldn’t be affected by the smoke from the managed Saffron Fire further south near Swamp Point.

And if we don’t like it, we can move. More when we get back.
